Professional Experience Placement (PEP) is a core component of this course and plays a vital role in developing practical skills. Students commence their placement after successfully completing all required theory assessments and Objective Structured Clinical Assessments (OSCA). Throughout the placement, students apply their knowledge and competencies in real clinical settings to meet the requirements of the qualification.

A total of 400 hours of Professional Experience Placement is required, structured across three stages:

  • 120 hours in an aged care setting (end of Semester 1)

  • 120 hours in a sub-acute care setting (end of Semester 2)

  • 160 hours in an acute care setting (end of the final semester)

These placements provide valuable exposure to diverse healthcare environments, helping students build confidence, practical skills, and industry readiness.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for entry into this program. However, applicants must meet the following admission requirements set by IHNA:

  • Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or an equivalent qualification

  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of course commencement

  • Meet the English language proficiency requirements specified by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)

  • Successful completion of the Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) assessment, demonstrating competency at Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 3 in reading and numeracy

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following English language criteria:

  • An overall IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and 6.5 in Writing, or

  • An equivalent English language test score as approved by the NMBA

Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital (LLND) Assessment

All students are required to complete an LLND assessment to determine their readiness for the course. This assessment ensures learners possess the foundational skills necessary for successful study and professional practice.

The LLND assessment evaluates:

  • Language and literacy skills

  • Numeracy competence

  • Digital literacy, including basic computer use, file management, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, online research, and awareness of digital safety and ethics


Professional Experience Placement (PEP) Requirements

To participate in Professional Experience Placements, students must meet the following requirements:

  • A valid National Police Clearance (NPC) or Australian Federal Police (AFP) Clearance

  • Required immunisations as per industry standards

  • A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC)

  • A current NDIS Worker Screening Check

  • Declaration of any medical conditions, disabilities, or medications that may require reasonable adjustment

Students are provided with clear and comprehensive information regarding assessment requirements and program progression prior to commencing their studies. This information is communicated through the offer letter, acceptance agreement, and detailed resources available on the institution’s website.

Before enrolment, students are also informed about assessment expectations and progression requirements during the Pre-Training Review (PTR) process. Additional guidance is provided during orientation sessions conducted prior to the commencement of the program.

All students are given access to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), where unit guides outline detailed assessment requirements and progression criteria for each subject. Assessment components for the program include:

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Students may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in accordance with IHNA’s established policies and procedures. RPL is granted based on verifiable evidence of a student’s prior skills, knowledge, and experience gained through formal, non-formal, or informal learning. All RPL assessments are conducted in line with IHNA’s approved assessment framework to ensure fairness, consistency, and compliance with quality standards. Decisions are clearly documented to maintain transparency and uphold the integrity of the qualification.


Credit Transfer (CT)

IHNA provides Credit Transfer for units that have been previously completed and are deemed equivalent to those within the current qualification. Evidence such as AQF certification or authenticated VET transcripts must be provided to support the application.

In determining eligibility for credit transfer, IHNA considers relevant regulatory and licensing requirements, including those set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), as well as the alignment of learning outcomes, scope of practice, and course content.

How many days do I need to attend on campus?
Students are required to attend 2 days per week, with 8 hours per day, for both domestic and international students.


Is the Professional Experience Placement (PEP) flexible?
No. PEP schedules are determined by the placement facility and must align with their operational shifts. Typical shifts include morning (7:00 am – 3:00 pm) and afternoon (2:00 pm – 10:00 pm).


Can I fast-track this course?
No, this course cannot be fast-tracked.


Can I apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT)?
Yes. Students are encouraged to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT) if they have relevant prior studies or experience.

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning):
RPL is assessed based on evidence of prior learning, skills, and experience in line with IHNA’s assessment policies. All RPL decisions are made fairly, transparently, and in accordance with regulatory standards.

Credit Transfer (CT):
Credit Transfer may be granted for previously completed equivalent units, supported by AQF certification or authenticated academic transcripts. Is full attendance mandatory?
Yes. A minimum of 80% attendance is mandatory for this course.


What will I learn during Simulation-Based Assessment (SBA)?

No. All placements are organised by IHNA and are subject to availability and placement requirements.

  • Why is there a fee increase every semester?
    The semester fee increase is required due to current national and global economic conditions. Adjustments to the fee structure are made in response to rising operational costs, enabling resources to be enhanced, facilities to be updated, and student support services to be improved to ensure a better learning experience.

    How much will the fee increase each semester?
    For 2025 intakes of the Diploma of Nursing, the semester fee has been updated to $12,000.
